In the immediate aftermath of the 2nd world war in 1948, Armed Forces Medical College was set up primarily to provide specialists and super specialists to the armed forces in India by giving them proper training. Armed Forces Medical college or AFMC, as it is popularly known, is situated at the historic city of Pune and over the last 50 years of its existence it has grown to become one of the premier institutes providing medical education in India.
The Armed Forces Medical College is fully residential college with separate hostels for both boys and girls. Residing in the hostels is compulsory for the cadets.The expense of the students is close to nil at AFMC as government of India provides free tuition, free lodging facilities, uniforms book subsidies and a allowance for upkeep of the uniforms. Students can also avail the canteen facilities for the defence personnel. Students in AFMC can engage in various recreational activities, as it is equipped with a swimming pool and separate courts for tennis, squash and basketball.
The AFMC library is quipped with most modern facilities. It has 18000 books and subscribes to more than 270 national and international journals. All these along with the dedicated faculty make up the healthy environment of AFMC.
