IIT Bombay students get more offers from PSUs
Thursday, March 12, 2009 More News...

Mumbai : Changing the traditional placements scenario this year, the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) has witnessed more offers from Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), besides high-tech companies.

Out of the total 850 students, including B.Tech, M.Tech and dual degree students, around 650 have been placed so far.

"We are concerned about the remaining candidates. They should also get good jobs and we are working towards it. While the market turmoil has led to longer placement seasons, the same does not apply to the institute," said A. Subhash Babu, professor-in-charge of placements at IIT-B.

"We do not have a placement season because the placement office is a permanent body in IIT-B. We invite recruiters to visit us during the period December to June. But PhD students don't have any such time restriction. Organizations may approach us during any time of the year," added Babu.

IIT-B has seen a "changed outlook" of students towards PSUs, who are now more open to jobs in this sector. "There are several reasons for this. PSUs are offering good salaries and the job security aspect is also there. So far, about 100 students have been placed in PSUs," he added.

The institute has not yet calculated the figures on average salaries offered by the companies. In addition to the global economic slowdown, the 26/11 terror attacks have also had some impact on the placements this year at the institute.
