Universities, IITs free to introduce new courses - HRD Ministry

New Delhi: "Universities and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country can design and develop new courses for their academic curricula from the next year without prior permission of the Government", Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Arjun Singh said here today.

The HRD Minister made this announcement in the form of a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

"The new courses should be recommended by the academic and administrative bodies of the institutions", he said.

The HRD Ministry's nod will allow the IITs to introduce courses on Nuclear Technologies from the 2009 academic session.

Presently, only IIT Kanpur is running nuclear engineering and technology courses in India. IIT Madras plans to introduce nuclear engineering courses from 2009.

The functioning of the nuclear engineering and technology programmes at the IITs will enable India to meet the demand for skilled technicians and hopefully, one day, there will be also a team of engineers, not only scientists, working on the nuclear power.
