New Delhi: In a recent global survey conducted on Asian universities, merely seven Indian universities could make to the list of Top-100 universities in Asia. The seven universities being the five IITs, Delhi University (DU) and Pune University.

DU stands at the 60th position while IIT Bombay at 30th, IIT Kanpur - 34, IIT Delhi - 36, IIT Madras - 49 and IIT Roorkee at 63rd position.

"Dedicated institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are better equipped to build global recognition than large public universities," said Ben Stower, Head of research at Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd.

This was for the first time that a regional ranking was conducted by QS that compiled the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings.

"It is disheartening to know that DU has been ranked so low within Asia and even the IITs have been ranked so low. The problem with the IITs is that even though they are good in Science but they lack in technology research," said Deepak Pental, Vice-Chancellor of DU.
