As per RBI data value of fake currency detected in 2007-08 at Rs 5.5 crore, a 137% increase on Rs 2.4 crore the previous year.
"In the last year we have seized fake currency worth roughly Rs. 5 lakh," informed Delhi Police sources.
In addition to English and Hindi, the campaign has been launched by the RBI in 11 regional languages. Posters are also being used during the campaign, to make students aware with various currency denominations.
The children are also taught how to differentiate between real and fake notes. Essays, games and films are used to sensitize the young minds.
The RBI's 100 all India scholars - college students chosen through an online test - are also adopting three to five schools and making presentations on financial literacy.
R Gandhi, RBI's regional director, said,"The rise in the cases of bogus currency being detected is one of the reasons which encouraged RBI to include this sensitization and awareness programme among school children."
The programme is expected to gain momentum once the board exams are over. Next on the list are College students.
