Gujarat institute students accuse teacher of molestation
Saturday, February 14, 2009 More News...

Ahmedabad : A group of students at the Mahila Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat are on warpath for the past four days, complaining of sexual harassment by a teacher. As many as 20 students of the institute at Idar town of the district, 120 km from here, sent letters to Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma on Thursday, urging him to step in and take stern action against instructor Kiran Nayak, whom they have accused of molesting them.

Copies of the letter have been sent to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Education Minister Ramanlal Vora, state Congress party unit chief Siddharth Patel and the local MP.

"Kiran Nayak often called the girls individually to the laboratory and would promise admission to upgraded courses provided they meet him in private later in the evening," said the father of one of the students.

"Things came to such a pass on Monday that Nayak sent a message to a girl student asking her to meet him in private at Bhiloda," he said.

The father said he went to meet principal Vikramsinh Bhati with the harassed girls before they called in their parents a couple of days ago.

"Bhati refused to listen to our grievances. He turned us out with a warning to the girls, threatening to fail them if they ever left their classes to come complaining about Nayak," he said.

A student alleged Nayak would often touch them while talking to them.

"He is devil incarnate and must be punished severely for his lewd behaviour," another student said. Many others also expressed anger at the behaviour of their teacher.

The students alleged the institute was trying to hush up the matter and pacify the agitating students to withdraw their complaints.

"We are firm and will not bow down to any pressure or inducements," a student added.
