Kolkata firm to sponsor technology course students |

Kolkata : In another instance of academics-industry tie-up, the Calcutta University Thursday signed an agreement with city-based software re-engineering services provider Metalogic Systems, under which the company would sponsor M Tech students in the university. Under the tie-up, scheduled to start from the 2009-10 academic session, the company would spend Rs.1.152 million for every batch of 12 students.
Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) technology, for which the students would be sponsored, is the process of creating integrated circuits by combining thousands of transistor-based circuits into a single chip. |
"Students who shape up well, will be absorbed by us. As per the agreement, we will have the first right of refusal," said Metalogic managing director Arup Dasgupta.
"There is lot of scope in VLSI, and we hope to rope in the best talents for our company through this arrangement," Dasgupta said.
The tie-up was a part of a CII-organised day-long seminar on VLSI Design, Electronics and Entrepreneurship.
Speaking on the sidelines of the programme, West Bengal Information Technology Minister Debesh Das said the state's IT growth figure might drop this fiscal due to the global meltdown.

"I cannot give you any figures right now. But Nasscom has said India's IT growth figure will decline following the recession. West Bengal cannot remain insulated," the minister said. "But we are confident that the figure will be more than the national average."
Nasscom is the software industry's representative body. The state has maintained a consistent IT growth figure of 46 percent in 2006-07 and 2007-08. On the other hand, the national IT growth figure dropped from 33 percent in 2006-07 to 29 percent in 2007-08.
Das, who visited the Silicon Valley last year, said one or two companies from there could start operating in the state from March. But he refused to identify the companies. (IANS)
