Apart from the central open universities, there are distance education institutes in most of the Indian states. The state distance learning institutes are serving a very important cause in India as they allow a person from the remotest corner of the country to pursue higher education in a course of his or her choice. Without these State Distance Learning Institutes, the percentage of people pursuing higher education would have been much lower than the existing rate in India.
